One sought in murder
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation along with Newton County Sheriff’s Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a suspected murderer by the name of Brandon Hambrick. Hambrick has active arrest warrants for the crime of murder in reference to the death of Alvin Hall. Hall’s body was found in his burned vehicle the evening of December 30 on McGiboney Lane in Newton County near the Rockdale County line.

Execution date set for Ford
The Newton County Superior Court has ordered the execution of convicted murderer Melbert Ford. The Court ordered the Department to carry out the execution on a date between February 23 and March 2. The execution is scheduled to take place at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23.

 For almost 50 years, Boy Scouts have camped and created cherished memories at Bert Adams Scout Reservation in Newton County. Feb. 8, 2010 also marks 100 years of Boy Scouts of America.

The beloved Covington Athletic Club is in the process of foreclosure and all of the exercise equipment has been sold.

On my honor: Boy Scout troops in Newton and Rockdale counties came together on Saturday for a centennial scouting expo. Different troops had booths set up, displaying various scout activities. Bean bag tosses, fire-making classes, a rope course and more were offered. The event was held at the Parker Road Government Center in Rockdale.

Bridgestone asks for refund after tax error
Bridgestone Golf is asking Newton County for a tax refund of $108,000, because some of Bridgestone’s equipment was incorrectly assessed on its tax filings in 2006 and 2007.

Newton County Superior Court Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr signed a warrant Friday for the execution of Melbert Ray Ford Jr who was convicted of killing his girlfriend and her niece in 1986.

Shelter finally signs lease with housing authority
The Garden of Gethsemane homeless shelter has been open in Covington since June, but it finally signed a lease last week.

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. My last column was about moving back to my hometown of Social Circle, so, I wanted to expand on that a little. My little hometown has found itself in the center of a very heated debate over a proposed drag strip. I'm not going into my stand on that issue, but, suffice it to say that you can draw your own conclusions by reading between the lines. Now, if you really want to know what I think, I might be bribed into telling with the right offer, say a nice steak dinner.




Two arrested in burglary
 On Friday January 29, at approximately 11:15 a.m. Newton County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress on Shenandoah Court.
